One of my best friends texted me today saying, “Hit me with a verse from the book kid. I need that.” Lately, life has been a little conufusing for him. Work was a little hectic, so I didn’t get a chance to respond to him until I got off. So on my ride home I was digging through my Bible app trying to find something I highlighted in the past that can apply to how he is feeling, and I came across this verse.
“Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely.”1 Corinthians 13:12 NLT
If we look into a mirror we can see ourselves standing in the present and we can see everything behind us as well. However, we cannot see what’s ahead of us. That’s how we see ourselves everyday; as who we are and who we have been. God knows who we are going to be, who we will become, and the version of ourselves who we cannot completely see in the mirror yet. We all have expectations of the person we aspire to be, but only God knows the infinite relfections your life will bring to the world. I know sometimes it’s hard to look in the mirror and see the person you want to be, but keep looking forward that person is there.
As human beings we try way too hard to make sense of the things going on in the moment when there’s still situations in our past that we don’t fully understand. And we probably won’t until later. It’s okay not to know. We are continously learning and growing.
“The Lord directs our steps, so why try to understand everything along the way?”Proverbs 20:24 NLT
I know this verse is a little hard for some of us to accept. Some of us are control freaks, some of us are perfectionist, and if you’re like me, some of us have to stick to a schedule. There are times we need to be off balance in order to learn how to stand up straight when life gets rocky. We have to get things wrong in order to learn how to solve problems and adapt when faced with different situations. And sometimes life doesn’t go as planned because God has a greater plan.
So next time you’re having a rough day and you pass by a mirror. Stop. Take a breath. Fix your outfit. Gas yourself up if you need to. But tell yourself, “You got this.”
